PHPA Files Formal Petition with NLRB to Represent CHL Players

(St. Catharines, ON) Today, the Professional Hockey Players’ Association filed a formal Petition for Certification with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in Phoenix, AZ, in an effort to become the certified collective bargaining unit for Central Hockey League (CHL) players.

By filing the Petition for Certification, the NLRB will govern the entire secret ballot vote process, enabling all CHL players the opportunity to cast a vote as to their desires of PHPA representation.

“I am confident that CHL Owners will embrace the credibility which the League will receive with our involvement,” said PHPA Executive Director Larry Landon. “We look forward to working with CHL players, in the advancement and protection of their rights, thereby enhancing their experience in professional hockey.”

Based on an overwhelming demonstration of interest from CHL players, the PHPA is certain that a secret ballot vote will result in the Association being the recognized voice for all current and future CHL Players. “The opportunity to grow the sport by way of creating stable, sustainable markets with enhanced benefits and working conditions for the players will be a cornerstone of our future actions,” added Landon.

    The Professional Hockey Players’ Association (PHPA) is pleased to announce the certification of the PHPA as the recognized collective bargaining unit for Central Hockey League (CHL) players.

    The ECHL announced that its teams have combined to raise more than $575,000 for cancer awareness and prevention in 2007-08.

    The Professional Hockey Players’ Association is pleased to announce that Doug Messier has been named the first recipient of the Curt Leichner Distinguished Member Award. The award, named after former PHPA Executive Director, Curt Leichner, will be presented annually to a member of the hockey community who has made significant contributions towards the advancement of professional minor league hockey, and has continued to diligently serve the sport.

    The Professional Hockey Players’ Association will be selling the remaining game-worn jerseys from the recent 2008 Chase Chevrolet ECHL All-Star game, through PHPA.com/shop, beginning Thursday March 6th at 12:00pm.
