AHL-PHPA Collective Bargaining Agreement

The following is an executive summary of key elements in the current AHL/PHPA Collective Bargaining Agreement. Purchase a full copy of the AHL-PHPA Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Please note, the following is merely a summary of the clauses within the agreement and does not constitute the official language of the agreement.

  • Term: September 1, 2007 to August 31, 2010

  • Insurance Coverage Period: for all players who qualify for off-ice insurance benefits is up to a maximum of 365 days in a coverage year from October 1 - September 30.

  • Minimum Salary: i) Players on loan from Lesser Leagues shall receive minimum compensation as follows:
    2007/08- $27,500 US
    2008/09- $28,000 US
    2009/10- $28,000 US
  • Minimum Compensation for Players on an AHL Contract: i) Players playing in the AHL on an AHL Standard Player's Contract shall receive minimum compensation as follows:
    2007/08- $35,000 US / $38,000 CDN
    2008/09- $36,000 US / $38,500 CDN
    2009/10- $36,500 US / $39,000 CDN
  • Per Diem Allowance: The per diem allowance for each Player accompanying his team while he is away form his home city for the purpose of playing a regular season or post-season game is as follows:
    2007/08- $60
    2008/09- $62
    2009/10- $63
  • Play-off Pool: The distribution of the playoff pool shall be made on the basis of 22 shares for 22 players listed on the clear day list. The Club has an option to include a 23rd Player from its roster in the distribution of the playoff pool.

  • Travel Expenses: Travel expenses incurred by a Player and his legal wife and children on their way to their Club's home city at the beginning of, or during the season, are the responsibility of the Club. This includes airfare or oil and fuel for one automobile, the rental charge for a moving trailer, and reasonable food and lodging expenses. It is the Players responsibility to maintain documentation of expenses and to submit copies of these expenses to the Club in order to receive proper reimbursement.

  • Dispute Resolution: Filing Deadlines: If any controversy, claim, or grievance is not filed with the AHL by the PHPA (or filed with both the AHL and the PHPA in the case of a Player grievance) within ninety (90) days of the date of the event giving rise to the controversy, claim, or grievance or the grievant's knowledge thereof; or if a Notice of Arbitration is not filed by either party in Step 4 above within forty-five (45) days of the commencement of Step 4's procedures, then said controversy, claim, or grievance shall be deemed to have been waived with prejudice.

  • Lease Obligations: A Player who is assigned to a lesser League, who maintains his AHL accommodations, if not recalled after 21 days, will have lease obligation paid by AHL Club for up to two (2) months. This will result in decisions being made as to the Club's intentions and will lead to clarity in lease obligations, which will result from Player transactions.

  • Employee Assistance Program: A drug, alcohol, financial and stress counseling program has been established and will be fully funded by AHL owners.

    This 24-hour a day program also provides assistance to young mothers in their upbringing of children, should conditions of the child's medical situation be uncertain or a concern. The 24-hour nurse help line will provide support when required.

  • Career Counseling: The Association created a Career Enhancement Program ten (10) years ago to assist Members with the ever-difficult transition from hockey.

    While the Association has fully funded this program, the League has agreed to provide funding where requested by the Association, as the Members' interest in this program has resulted in increasing costs.

    Doug Messier was honoured at the Professional Hockey Players’Association’s Annual Meeting of Player Representatives, Saturday, June 14, 2008, as the inaugural recipient of the Curt Leichner Distinguished Member Award.

    Les Borsheim , a defender and forward for the Colorado Eagles hockey team, was in critical condition at North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley after his motorcycle crashed in rural Weld County.

    The ECHL and its member teams mourn the loss and express their condolences to the family and friends of Frank Milne, who passed away suddenly on Friday. He was 74 years old.

    Jason Krog’s four-point night included his second hat trick of the postseason and propelled the Chicago Wolves to the American Hockey League’s 2008 Calder Cup championship with a 5-2 win over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins before 9,808 fans at Allstate Arena on Tuesday night.
